Diva Roller

Black & Pink Diva SuitcaseI don’t know about you ladies out there tramping in Audition Wonderland, but I need a lot of stuff to get ready. I've literally been schlepping my old highschool backpack around town, stuffing it to the gills with my audition dress, shoes, my book, makeup, a curling iron, and snacks. Depending on how long I’d be away from my apartment, I might also have a book to read, a computer, and a change of clothes if I want to go to the gym afterwards.

I was breaking my back! My poor bookbag was busting at the seams, and I had already sewn the left strap back on after it ripped from the constant sling-on, sling-off. I needed an upgrade.

Everything can fit in my backpack, as long as I make sure it goes in its correct origami place. Packing for the day can be a lot like tetris. You place the largest items on the bottom, and stack accordingly, making sure every nook is optimized. The problem with this method is that if you have to pull something out quickly, like a headshot, everything gets out of place and suddenly you can't close your bag. I'd find myself juggling my backpack and everything I could shove back into it. It was stressing me out.

Since my recent audition spree, I’ve been checking out other women’s luggage. No, this is not a euphemism, but a literal statement. How did all these other girls carry the appropriate tools for their auditions?

Some women have carry-on sized suitcase; I’ve seen suitcases as big as 25”. There are backpacks on wheels, tote bags on wheels, and your classic square suitcase.

I went through a mental dilemma, trying to figure out what was the right option for me. I find the larger suitcases to be a nuisance in the room, taking up valuable floor space for the other auditioners, and yet, I knew I needed something on wheels to save my back from exhaustion.  I don’t want other auditioners to think of me as another diva with her suitcase packed with outfits for every occasion, but that is exactly what I needed. A suitcase packed with a few options for the various appointments I might go to through the day.

In the words of Beyonce, a diva is a female version of a hustler.

Eventually I sprung for a 17" rolling laptop bag, which is big enough to fit my necessities, but doesn’t scream “diva roller.” I think it would be cool to have a backpack with light-up wheels, but that’s just too flashy.

What strategies do you use for bringing your things into town for auditions? What we could really use are lockers!
