Answers to Last Week's Questions
As promised, here are my answers to the questions I posted last week (in purple.)
You find $20 on the street. What do you spend it on?
a) A ticket to a show
b) A ticket to a movie
c) Music
d) A book
e) Something else
If I'm being completely honest, that bill is going to a nice bottle of wine. It's a luxury, and a simple pleasure but not a necessity, so it definitely goes in the "rainy day" category of my budget. Depending on the time of month, I might also spend it on utilities.
If you had to go without one of the following for the rest of your life, which would it be?
a) Theatre
b) Movies
c) Music
d) Books
Ah! This is a HORRIBLE question. Why did I ask it?! I think I am going to cheat and say books, assuming that I can still read everything that is available on the Internet. Seriously though, I would be such a different person if I had been without one of these growing up, and I can't imagine my life without them going forward.
When you are sad, which of these things is most likely to make you feel better?
a) Seeing a show
b) Watching a movie
c) Listening to music
No question. To reverse the question above, if I had to choose one of those four options to keep for the rest of my life (and lose the others) it would be music. Can't live without it. Really.
d) Reading a book
Yes or No: Have you ever gone to see a show because of a finding a postcard in a cafe/restaurant/theatre/etc (not because a friend gave one to you)?
Nope. Can we please find a better way to advertise? Even if a friend gives me a postcard to a show, it always ends up lost, or at the bottom of my purse with coffee all over it, or in the trash… I feel like the off-off broadway community is a large contributor to the destruction of the world's forests. I only ever use Facebook to look up that info anyway.
What is the main reason you go to the theatre?
a) I know someone involved in the show
I believe in Karma. And I know a lot of people involved in Theatre. I believe that if I want an audience, I have to be an audience member. The problem with this is that it leaves very little time or money to go see shows for any of the other following reasons. I'm always embarrassed when people say to me, "So, you live in New York, you must see a lot of Broadway shows!" eerrrrmmmm…. I am trying to be better about that. Going to see Jerusalem today. Can't wait!
b) I read good reviews
c) Everyone is talking about it
d) It's fun
How often to you go to the theatre?
a) Feels like every day
b) Pretty much once a week
c) Once a month-ish
This is sort of a false answer - when I am in a show, I hardly ever go to the theatre because I end up being onstage at the same time as everyone else. When I'm not, I probably go about once a week. So I think it evens out to about once a month.
d) Um, I went to a show the last time my grandma was in town
e) Maybe once a year
How often do you go to the movies?
a) Feels like every day
b) Pretty much once a week
c) Once a month-ish
I watch a movie (or part of a movie, or an episode of something) every day on my computer, but actually going to the movie theatre happens less frequently. Again, during the winter (and especially during Oscar season) I feel like I live at the movie theatre. Once it starts getting warmer and there's nothing playing that I feel like I need to spend $13 on, I only go once every few months. So it evens out.
d) Um, the last time I went to one was on that really bad date...
e) Maybe once a year
How often do you go to a concert?
a) Feels like every day
b) Pretty much once a week
c) Once a month-ish
d) Um, I went to one the last time my stoner roommate from college was in town
e) Maybe once a year
I do see live music more frequently than that, (in jazz clubs, bars, etc.) but if I am incorporating the principal I set up with the "going to the theatre" question and doing something that a) requires some advance planning and b) might be more expensive than I want it to be, then I really only go about once a year.
How often do you go to art shows?
a) Feels like every day
b) Pretty much once a week
c) Once a month-ish
d) Um, I went to a show the last time I wanted to score free booze
I'm embarrassed, but it's true. Museums happen a lot for me but the times I have gone to a specific gallery for a specific show have occurred through a very random series of events, usually involving high heels and bourbon.
e) Maybe once a year
You are condemned to solitary confinement for the rest of your life. You're allowed to keep one of the following with you. Which one is it?
a) Your play collection
b) Your music collection (assume you have something to play it on)
c) Unlimited paper and pens
More than anything else in the world, I trust my imagination to keep me occupied.
d) Your book collection
e) Your movie collection (assume you have something to play them on)
Fill in the blank...
When I grow up, I want to be... NOPE. NOT growing up. Ever.
You are 75. Your grandkids are asking you yet AGAIN to tell them about the time you... rode an elephant through the Mashatu game reserve in Botswana with the film crew you were working with on that movie you wrote about growing up in Africa.
What kind of dessert are you and why? (just had to end with something sweet. womp womp.)
Dark Chocolate Fondue.
Warm. Better with liquer. Goes with anything. Just be careful of the skewers.
