I Will Be an Actor When I am Rich

045 Actors of all levels email me with questions or in search of some friendly advice. And I love to help them. Even if it sometimes takes me weeks to return an email...

(but that is another blog post)

My favorites are from the newbies. The dying-to-get-started-but-where-is-the-start? kind. Among the recent gems:

“This guy approached me in the mall and said I could make thousands being in commercials!” (Excellent! Can I have his number? I would like a word...)

or...

“Do I need nude photos for my acting portfolio?" (Always tempting to say yes when it is a young hot guy...)

and this broad and very odd statement:

“I am waiting until I have enough money to be an actor.”

Well, keep right on waiting my friend. It is going to be a long wait.

This statement left me scratching my head. Sure, there are some investments needed in order to put your toe in the acting waters... You need some materials like headshots, classes (please, I beg of you), the freedom to work for little or no pay for awhile. Maybe a long while. But if your dream was to start a carpet cleaning business, the financial investment would be far greater.  And people wouldn’t think you were as crazy.

So, you keep right on waiting my friend.

We will be over here on set when you are ready.

So true! You really do need a lot of money to start-up an acting career and not many people realize that.
