Are You Married?

I had a call-back for a commercial audition on Sunday with a live parrot!  I thought that it was one of the Engagementring2 most exciting call-backs I'd ever gotten and couldn't wait to work with a live parrot.

Turns out that the parrot wasn't what defined THAT call-back.  In fact, my call-back was in the afternoon and apparently the parrot had been working all morning and was being packed up when I got there.  So, I didn't even get to work with it.

They were taking in two girls at a time (all brunettes in business suits - hello clones!).  The atmosphere in the call-back was very different than the vibe in the first auditions;  the initial call had been run by a truly fabulous gay man and it was so much fun!  This time, the room was tense and my fabulous friend was stressed because the two stuffy Brits running the room were decidedly confused about what they wanted to see.

Regardless, the audition went so well!  They even asked me to stick around and go in with another girl.  I had seemingly made it through this whole process swimmingly, until...

"Excuse me, could you two just pop back in here for one sec?"  Brit #1 asked.

"Sure, of course I'm-so-easy-to-work-with-I'm-happy-about-everything!"  We replied.

Brit #2 "Are either of you married?"

My audition partner, "Oh, I'm engaged"  and flashes a ring far larger than any non-famous actor I know could afford.

"I'm SINGLE"  I declare.  Like, I really declare it.

(Looking back on this scenario, it seems I would've been better off to have just said:  "No, I'm not married or engaged.  However, having broken off an engagement last year I am happy with my non-engaged/non-married status and definitely put my point of view of that feeling into my declaration.  I beat myself up for a little while, but I figure I was just being myself.  If being myself looses me this job, it will gain me the next).

"Oh..."  Brit #2, "This is not the casting couch."

Me, mortified, as my fabulous friend ushers us out the door, "Oh, no no that's not what I meant at all ha ha just happy to be single ha ha."

Oops.  I realize that I declared my non-married status so quickly on the heels of my engaged partner, that it may have sounded like I thought I had one up on her.  Also, I guess it sounded like I was saying "I will sleep with you if you hire me."

I still have no idea why they would've asked us that question.  All I know is, from now on I am going to respond to personal questions in a very business like manner.

That is hilarious! Sorry your cd took your answer the wrong way but at least this will be a great audition story you can look back on and laugh.
