Chasing Pavements
Cue chorus of angels...its audition season!
Come out of your winter hibernation and dust off your 16 bars, people. Curl your hair, put on your heels and lets get ready to pound some pavement.
I totally get that casting something over the holidays could be a logistical nightmare; but why the need for every theater to cast their entire season now? My to-do list currently looks like," Prepare for { } audition, prepare for { } audition, prepare for { } audition, etc." Shows in DC cast 6-8 months in advance. This is definitely go-time; I've got to get my head on straight, otherwise, it could affect my work for the rest of the year.
Reflecting back on where I've come in just a year, my attitude towards auditioning has changed greatly. A year ago, I felt very desperate for work, and I think that showed. It got in the way of me giving my best work, and also made me really anxious. This year, I'm feeling a lot more zen. There are only so many factors that I can control; such as preparing the material well, looking good, and being my true self; the rest is out of my hands.
They offered that part to someone else 5 months ago? Nothing I can do about that.
They are looking for someone tall and blond? Not my look.
They want to cast non-union? Oh well.
So although I've made 5 audition appointments in the past week, and the old-me wants to freak out a little, the new-me is going to take a deep breath and give 'em hell. Auditions are fun; now I just have to allow myself to feel that way.

Well said. It must be an actor's right of passage to get to that "zen" place of not worrying about what happens in the audition room but just enjoying the experience and being yourself in there. I couldn't have said it better: "allow myself to feel that way." Enjoy audition {}, {}, and {}. You got this!
