Collecting Inspirations
I had the great priveledge to watch a live interview with Stephen Sondheim at the Music Center at Strathmore this weekend. I was only 8 rows away from him, and all I could think of was how much I wanted to give him a hug.
This man has given birth to so much music that has shaped me and so many others. I must admit I was star struck; my heart was racing a little bit. He was very charming, telling stories how "[He] and Ethel went to Cole's apartment to sing him some new songs." Ethel, as in Merman, and Cole, as in Porter. He mostly talked of how he came to write the earlier works of his career, and things he finds important while writing lyrics. It was an extremely enjoyable afternoon and I was happy to have seen the legend!
I'm looking forward to reading his new book, "Finishing the Hat," as soon as I get off of the mile long holding list at the library.
